Interview Mom
I would like to introduce to you a woman who has given me life. She is my greatest adviser; she’s the one who always comforts me. I would like to tell you more about my mom. Since I was in kindergarten to fourth grade, every teacher of mine all loved her. They all loved her for two reasons, because she has both passion and beauty. Now, I will tell you a lot more about my mom.
“My full name is Ngoc-Lan Thi Nguyen. My parents selected this name for me because my name means orchid, which is a very pretty kind of flower. So, I guess that they want me to be pretty like the orchid flower.” Therefore, whenever you’ve seen my mom, and you think she’s pretty, then you’d know why. In Vietnam, there is a famous island called Phu Quoc. That is the place where my mom was born in, on June 19th, 1972. I think, and I’m almost sure, that hide-and-seek is one of everybody’s favorite games, and so is my mom’s. Her other favorite game was Jacks, which is a game that you play with a ball and about ten sticks or more. “I think that my favorite toys were dolls, because I was a girl and all the dolls were so pretty,” said Mom. I do agree with her on that, girls like dolls when they were young. Consequently, my mom lived on an island, she loved swimming.
Everyone that has a family probably has chores. But from what I know is that when my parents were young, they have to do extra chores. My mom said that, “Kids these days only have to wash dishes or do the laundry for chores (she’s talking about me).” That is true, I agree with her on that. Anyway, after that she also said, “When I was about your age, I have to wash dishes, do the laundry, then clean up the house. After that, I have to go shopping for food, next I have to do the cooking also.” See, I told you that she had to do lots of chores. In fact, what’s interesting about one of my mom’s chores is that she hated cooking. However, she is a really good cook, at least that is what my dad and I said to make her happy. (We are lying, but in a good way though, just kidding.) My mom is really a good cook; I think that she inherited it from my grandma. There weren’t any recipes been passed down to my mom in the family, she always comes up with something of her own. After all, she is a cook, and a good one, too.
Before I came to the United States for a few days, I met some of my mom’s best friends. She said to me that, “We were best friends since college,” after I asked her how long has that been best friends. Nhung Nguyen, Thuy Truong, Chau Tran, and Hong Tran are all my mom friends’ names. Consequently, the fact that their names were so pretty, all the friends were pretty, too. One of my mom’s friends bought me a stuff animal, which is a pig; my mom said to her friend that, that one would be a new member of pig in my room. After that, we all laughed at that comment. But it’s true; however, my room was full of pigs that it was like I’m a pig among pigs.
I have always wanted to hear about my parents’ story about how they’ve met. Luckily for me, today I’ve got the opportunity to listen. So now, I’m going to tell you about it. “I met your father when we were in colleges. Your father went to my school to play with my friends, because they were classmates. Therefore, that is how I’ve met your father.” Wow…! Ok, you won’t believe this, but my dad said the same thing, too. How strange…. Furthermore, my mom said that she went to the movies, wandered around and talk on dates… she said the same thing like my dad. Well, I guess that is why they are husband and wife now.
Anyway, back to my mom when my dad proposed her. “I felt nervous and happy when I said yes,” said Mom. I think that everyone felt nervous when they proposed or were proposed to. Then I already knew that my dad proposed my mom in a temple located in Saigon, in around 1993. In the same year, after Dad proposed to Mom, they got married in April 11, 1993, in Saigon also. I heard my aunts said that the party was really nice; my mom planned it all by herself, with some helps I think. My aunts also told me that my mom is a really creative person, that’s how she managed to plan the wedding. One of my aunts, who name’s Yen, told me that my mom supposed came to the United States with my grandparents, uncles and aunts, but she stayed back in Vietnam because she wanted to married my dad. I think that at first my grandma didn’t agree about it, but she finally accepted my dad. Don’t you agree with me that’s it kind of neat? I think so.
Anyway, people probably remember something that’s really special to them on their wedding days. However, my mom is different, she remembers that after the wedding, she got really hungry because she ate nothing all day. Isn’t she a special mom? Anyhow, let’s hear my mom talking about my dad, “I would say that he’s a kind person, a gentleman, and caring. What I admire most about him is that he takes good cares of our family, and he’s always caring.” Awww… don’t you think that’s nice and sweet of my mom?
My next question was about how my mom found out that she was going to be a parent for the first time. Then she told me that at first she was feeling tired, and her “sense” of a woman kind of told her, I think. “I felt really happy to know that I was going to be a parent for the first time,” she said. Of course she would feel happy for having me. Furthermore, I’m a wonderful girl and she is lucky to have me, just kidding. My dad chose mine and my little brother’s name. But I guess that my mom also has a part in choosing our names, too. Well, if you’ve been wondering what my name means, I’ll tell you right now. Ngoc-Tam means pure soul; my parents want me to grow-up to be a good person, always caring and being nice to others. Yep, that’s me, I’m nice and caring for others people. As I’ve mentioned that I have a little brother, his name is Thien-Nhan. Let’s find out what his name means with me. Thien-Nhan means a good person, my parents want him to grow-up and be a good person just like me. Well, for starting, he is only nice with my mom at home. He’s always bugging around me, but I’m used to it. Although that he bugs me a lot, he is nice to me some times, and I love him. He is cute and sweet when you see him and get to know him.
Every parent has some proudest moments in their life as a parent. Well, I wonder what my mom’s proudest moments are, why don’t you find out with me? “My proudest moment as a parent is when I saw the moment you and your brother were born. Also, when I see you and your brother got accomplishments from your teachers,” my mom answered after thinking a moment. Well, for one thing that I’m almost sure of is that my teachers love me. Hi hi ^.^! Anyway, everyone has their own accomplishments that they are proud of; let’s hear about my mom’s. “The accomplishments I was proud of were to pass college. Then became a teacher, and turned to a roll-model teacher, too. Finally, is to have a great, happy, and loving family.” When my mom said about became a roll-model teacher, I think she missed being that. I could tell because all the students have been with her loved her very, very much. They even came to our house to visit my mom for the last time. I think she missed all her students and job very much. Oh yeah let’s talk about my old house in Vietnam, there were a lot of pretty pictures hung around the house. Well, at first if you just give them a glance, you would think that they were just normal pictures. But you are wrong, if you look more carefully, they were actually thousand and thousand pieces of puzzle put together by my mom. My mom used to sit at night when she has free time and put them together. It became one of her hobbies, I guess, and she was good at it. My mom said she remembers all of them, she misses them, too, I think.
Anyhow, on holidays, my family doesn’t have any special tradition, except for New Year Eve. We just gather together to my grandparents’ house to play, talk, eat, or give each other presents. My mom agreed with me when I told her that. Well, after telling you about my dear loving mom, what do you think of her? She said she would want you to remember as a confident person, who is ready for whatever lies ahead. Do you think of her as a person like that? To conclude, my mom is a wonderful person who always is polite, gentle, and caring. She has given up all what she has dreamed of for me and my little brother to come to America for a good education. I appreciate that a lot, so I always remind myself that I won’t ever let her down. I would always do my best to accomplish a wonderful dream of my own, just like my mom. So, that’s part about my mom, I am sure that you will love her once to get to really know her. Thank you for given out some time to read the biography about my mom. I hope you enjoyed it!
